Some smallholders, particularly those who keep a range of traditional breeds of livestock and poultry, have successfully opened small farm parks to the public.
Having a range of rural crafts such as spinning and weaving on view is also popular from the educational point of view. Toilet and refreshment facilities are essential, while a small gift shop is popular. Talking to local schools and organisations is often useful so that specific tours can be arranged. Local publicity is vital; letting the local media know what is happening ensures that people know of your existence. Local advertising can then follow.
Again, public liability insurance is essential as well as good signposting and a car park. It is important to remember that if the public, particularly children, have close access to animals a notice should be erected advising them to wash their hands after touching them.
